Heritage & Mission

The Craft of
Sustainable Stewardship

Barben Bees is a Cape Town-based beekeeping operation dedicated to the health of the colony, the resilience of the Western Cape's biodiversity, and the production of premium equipment.

Our Roots

Born in Vredehoek, Sustained by the Wild

What began as a single colony on the slopes of Vredehoek has grown into a multi-apiary operation across the Western Cape. We manage hives with a broader eye on the Cape ecosystem.

From urban sanctuaries in Vredehoek to fynbos fields across the Western Cape, we partner with local conservationists and farmers. By keeping hive densities sustainable and avoiding over-saturation, we preserve native flora and provide crucial, balanced pollination services to Grabouw orchards, Overberg canola fields, and home gardens alike.

"We keep bees so nature can thrive - looking at the impact that bees have on the agriculture economy and understanding where we fit in the value chain drives us to work hard. For the labour we do helps provide fruit and vegetables on our own tables."

Our Timeline

The Journey of the Hive

From a single hive in a Vredehoek garden to a network of regional apiaries supporting agriculture and conservation across the Western Cape.

Table Mountain Slopes & Trading Begins

Born in Vredehoek

What began as a single rescue colony on the slopes of Table Mountain evolved into a dedicated apiary footprint. Jacques founded Barben Bees and began trading in 2016 out of a deep-seated passion for conservation, focusing initially on protecting localized Cape honeybee swarms from urban hazards and establishing healthy colony baselines.

Operational Model

Colony-First Beekeeping

Our approach to beekeeping is guided by a deep respect for honeybee biology. By placing hives in harmony with natural floral cycles and harvesting only true surplus honey, we ensure colony health and ecosystem balance always come first.

Biology First

Every management choice puts the bees first. We harvest only actual surplus honey, keeping winter stores fully intact and prioritizing the safety and longevity of the queen and colony.

Stewardship Protocol:
  • Surplus-only honey extraction
  • Zero chemical treatment feeding
  • Winter-store reserve preservation

Seasonal Alignment

We place our hives in harmony with local micro-climates and natural floral cycles. Adapting to the unique rhythms of fynbos blooms avoids colony stress and ensures high-quality honey surplus.

Stewardship Protocol:
  • Migratory fynbos tracking
  • Micro-climate placement mapping
  • Anti-oversaturation auditing

I went on the Barben Bees Bee Keeper Beginners Course with my son Joel. It was an amazing experience. Jacques was a great teacher and host and the day was packed with great information and a practical on some hives. It was such a worthwhile day.

An unforgettable day! The workshop was not only incredibly informative but also surprisingly calming—especially during the practical session, where I felt no fear around the bees. The facilitator created such a welcoming and supportive environment. I left feeling inspired, empowered, and eager to continue my beekeeping journey.

I have bought honey as well as beeswax blocks from Barben Bees for a number of years, and their honey is absolutely superb — 100% natural and pure with nothing added to it, unlike the so-called "natural" honey most supermarkets advertise. I have always had extremely professional service and good advice from them. I can highly recommend them.
